Statins may raise the risk of Parkinson's disease
Every year now, upwards of 90,000 people in the U.S. are now being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimate that half a million people in the country live with the progression and it's increasing. This has a direct affect on your Quality of Life.
Lipitor is a "statin" type of drug commonly used to decrease the so called “bad” cholesterol levels levels in the blood. And is often prescribed to patients at supposed "risk" of cardiovascular disease, statins will improve the blood flow and restore the elasticity of the arteries, they claim.
Recently, there has been an increasing interest (by Big Pharma) in the potential of statins to protect brain cells and thus prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's disease.
These preliminary results have been inconclusive and under further review and research have actually found quite the opposite.
Xuemei Huang, Ph.D. – a professor of Neurology at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA, and an author of the new study – describes another reason why the evidence of the so called neuroprotective role of statins has been inconclusive so far:
“Higher cholesterol,” Prof. Huang says, and then the prescription of, “statins actually increase risk of Parkinson’s disease."
The team examined medical insurance claim data from 50 million people. Of these, they selected 22,000 people living with Parkinson’s disease.
The study found that the use of statin drugs correlated with a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
These "statin" drugs include: Lipitor, Crestor, Atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, cerivastatin, pitavastatin, and simvastatin, essentially all cholesterol medications have side effects that will lead to Parkinson's disease and symptoms.
In conclusion, Prof. Huang points out “Statin use is directly associated with higher, Parkinson’s disease risk, and an increase in symptoms associated with Parkinson's including:
* Neuro degenerative
* Muscle tissue weakness and pain
* Cognitive and memory issues
* Depression
* Pain in extremities
* Diabetes
* Heart conditions & stroke
* Unusual weakness
